Green buidling solution

One of the biggest challenges facing our planet in this Century is that of conserving the environment. As a result, eco friendly solutions are being sought in every aspect of human living. If you are concerned about how your build affects the environment and the planet in general, there are some great ideas here on how you can help through your build. You’ll also be happy to note that most of these ideas will keep your construction and maintenance costs low.

Lighting

Artificial lighting consumes quite a bit of energy and puts pressure on natural resources. To cut on this consumption, install energy saving bulbs that consume less energy. Turning your lights off during the daytime is also a great way to conserve electricity. For even more eco friendly results, install bigger windows when building. These will allow you to rely more on natural light. Also think about building as much outdoor living spaces as possible, e.g. patios and verandas.

Air conditioning

Air conditioning consumes nearly a quarter of most homes’ energy. The consumption is even likely to be higher in commercial premises such as restaurants. One natural solution here is to rely on cool fresh air from outside by opening your windows more. If this is not enough or is not possible, try using fans. These consume much less energy than modern HVAC systems. And if you have to use air conditioning, opt for a ducted system. Ducted air conditioning systems allow you to turn cooling or heating off in dormant rooms, thus reducing energy consumption.

General energy

In terms of general energy use, one highly recommended option is to go for solar energy. After the initial installation, solar energy will provide you with free energy for life. This energy can be used for heating, cooling, lighting, and even powering devices. Another idea on how to cut general energy consumption in your building is by only installing electronic equipment that is energy efficient. Simply look for an energy star rating when buying cookers, dishwashers, refrigerators, microwaves, etc.

Construction

You can also make the actual structure of your property more eco friendly. For example, install skylights to bring more natural light indoors. Build taller ceilings and install natural ventilation to allow natural cooling. Install heavy insulation to lower heating and cooling costs. You can also build using recycled timber, metal, or concrete. And lastly, you can build smaller properties that require less energy to heat or cool.

Water

Water is a focal subject when discussing the environment. To conserve water in your residential or commercial property, install toilets that use less water when flushing or go for dual-flush toilets. In the bathrooms, install showerheads that use low pressure. Another great idea here is to harvest rain water and use it for cleaning or cooking.

Air quality

In regards to improving air quality, open your windows more. The outdoors often have cleaner air than you have inside. Also install enough ventilation around your property. And lastly, grow indoor plants. They will add more fresh air to your spaces.
